The history of National Park is closely interlinked with the history of tree-planting in Singapore. In the 1960s, when the Singapore government embarked on nation-building, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew (the then Prime Minister) was intent on transforming Singapore into a Garden City. He wanted to make a city-state within a garden environment comprising parks, gardens, and open spaces connected by means of a matrix of tree-lined roads and park connectors for cyclists and pedestrians.
