History:
On March 8, 1915, a store was purchased by Robert C. Kidd at 786 Columbia street in New Westminster, British Columbia. Robert C. Kidd developed various types of innovative merchandising techniques to attract customers at his store including odd-penny pricing and selling 18 ounces of tea for the price of a pound. Soon, the store was known as the “overweight tea” store. When Robert opened his second store, he named it “Overwaitea”.
From August 2015, the OFG (Overwaitea Food Group) went on growing to operate and own around 145 grocery stores under six different brand names in B.C. and Alberta. Later in 2016, OFG went on opening four other stores in Saskatchewan and three other stores in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Again in 2017, additionally opened a full-size store in Whitehorse, Yukon. Other than this in February 2014, Overwaitea announced that it would purchase 15 stores from Sobey, of which three were in Alberta and twelve in British Columbia. The stores purchased were registered under the Safeway, Thrifty Foods and Sobey banners and the same will convert to become the Save-On-Foods stores. Later, it was announced that the OFG would convert its 11 Pricesmart Food locations to the Save-On-Food brand.
As of August 2015, Overwaitea Food Group employed more than 15,000 team members. On March 22, 2018, the Overwaitea Food banner became defunct by the closing of the last two locations in British, Columbia. The same stores were reopened on the following day as the Save-On-Foods stores.
